Suhana de Leon-Sanchez is a New York State licensed and ANCC Board Certified Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Suhana studied at the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences with University Honors. She received her second bachelor's degree in nursing and a Master's degree in the Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program at Columbia University. Suhana has been inducted into several academic honor societies including Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. She is also a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association.
Suhana trained at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital and has worked in a variety of clinical settings. She began her career in psychiatry at Payne Whitney/New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center on an acute-care inpatient psychiatric unit for adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. Suhana has leadership experience and has served as the Mental Health Site Director for HELP/PSI, Inc.'s Brooklyn primary care FQHC/Article 28 clinic. Suhana currently works in the field of tobacco cessation as a Nurse Practitioner/Tobacco Treatment Specialist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Hospital in New York City. She has experience providing psychopharmacology (med management) as well as individual, group, family and couples psychotherapy.
Suhana boasts years of experience in treating adult patients with Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Substance Abuse/Dependence, Anxiety, Psychosis, Eating Disorders, PTSD, ADHD, OCD, and many other psychiatric disorders that cause emotional suffering and dysfunction. Suhana demonstrates expertise working with individuals who are struggling with issues related to family-of-origin, self esteem and growth, loss, chronic and terminal illness, life transitions (marriage, childbirth, divorce, job loss), gender and sexuality, infertility/miscarriage, and interpersonal relationships. She has been trained in various modalities of psychotherapy which she applies daily in her supportive approach when prescribing psychotropic medications. She prides herself in her ability to utilize evidence-based-practice to help patients improve their quality of life and functioning through education and support. Suhana is passionate about and dedicated to helping individuals heal in partnership according to each client's individual circumstances and preferences. She ensures that patients have all their questions answered before leaving her office and takes the necessary time needed to establish appropriate treatment plans so that patients feel comfortable with mutual decisions for treatment.
